Felt making project at Heathfield and Knoll school with Textiles Tutor Raya Brown

This was a great Felt making  project  at Heathfield and Knoll school!

I really enjoyed teaching the students at my local Heathfield and Knoll school in Kidderminster.

Year 9 students had so much fun learning wet felting techniques while recreating their drawings of insects in felt! They loved exploring different fibres and creating lovely textures and colour effects. The students’ work , felted pictures, look amazing!

I also worked with Year 10 students who created beautiful felted landscapes which would contribute to their GCSE portfolio.

Wonderful Nuno Felting Technique by Raya Brown

Wonderful Nuno Felting technique !  I love it!

This is a relatively new technique discovered by an Australian Artist Polly Sterling and a Japanese Artist Tashiko Kotakko.

The term derives from a Japanese word NUNO which means fabric.  This is about combining wool and fabric together.  I love this technique which allows me to achieve amazing textures and create strong and wearable felt.

I love combining silk fabric and merino wool. This is my latest project- a bespoke Nuno Felted shawl (double sided) which I made for my friend Sheila for her special Birthday.

Fantastic wool paintings created by ladies from Inspire group in Barston.

Fantastic results have been achieved by the ladies from Inspire group on March 8th!  What a great idea it was to celebrate The  International Womens’ Day learning a new technique of wool painting!

I really enjoyed teaching these creative ladies and watching their work develop and grow!  They made some lovely wool paintings of fields with poppies and other flowers and included some beautifully made trees and bushes in their work.  What a great day!

Thank you, ladies,  for making me feel so welcome and helping me to set up!

Textiles Artist Raya Brown in Bratislava teaching felt making at British International School

Bratislava Felt making project with The British International School

I have just returned from Bratislava, Slovakia where I delivered a Felt making project at the British International School. I enjoyed it so much!! What a great school!  Lovely students and teachers! They made me feel so welcome!!

The pupils learnt about the history and origins of felt making and watched my felt making demonstration.

They made a beautiful felted wall hanging and some small felt pieces.  Their wall hanging was based on their local environment theme with the mountains and Bratislava castle in the background and wild flowers and insects in the foreground. Their small felted pieces represented the insects and birds.

The children had a chance to explore all stages of wet felting process and experiment with merino wool, various fibres and yarns. The colour blends and textures that they achieved look wonderful! They really enjoyed  learning  a new skill of felt making. They loved therapeutic and tactile experience of working with natural fibres and were very pleased and proud of  their end results.

Thank you so much to all the pupils and teachers from the British International School in Slovakia!

Lovely seascape wool paintings were created at Magic Wool Art and Craft Studio in Worcestershire last weekend

Some fantastic seascapes were created at Magic Wool Studio this weekend. I had a joy of teaching and being in a company of lovely ladies from Herefordshire. They brought photographs of their favorite places and recreated them in fibres. I was inspired by their creative ideas and enthusiasm! Good luck with your future wool paintings Serena and Natalie.
